Do I need a pass? Yes if you stop, stay, use park facilities, visit towns/viewpoints, or travel scenic parkways such as the Icefields Parkway or Bow Valley Parkway. Parks Canada says through traffic on Highway 1 that does not stop does not need to purchase a pass.

Canada Strong Pass: Parks Canada admission is free from June 19 to September 7, 2026 inclusive. You do not need to buy a Discovery Pass just for admission inside that window.
What still costs extra: shuttle fares, shuttle reservation fees, Lake Louise paid parking, camping permits, fire permits, hot springs, tours, and paid attractions still apply. Parks Canada camping and overnight stays get a 25% discount, not a full waiver.

Free admission days can be extremely busy. Expect full parking lots by 8am at popular spots like Lake Louise. Moraine Lake remains closed to personal vehicles, and the shuttle system still operates with its own fares and reservation fees.

The fine print
If you stop in Banff National Park, use park facilities, visit towns or viewpoints, camp, hike, or travel scenic parkways such as the Icefields Parkway or Bow Valley Parkway, you need valid admission outside free-admission dates. Parks Canada says you do not need to purchase a pass when travelling through on Highway 1 without stopping.
