GETTING TO BANFF

From Calgary Airport to mountain paradise. Here's how.

🎯 THE SHORT ANSWER

Best overall: Shuttle (Brewster Express or Banff Airporter) - $75-150 CAD, reliable, stress-free

Best for flexibility: Car rental in summer - explore at your own pace

Skip: Uber - expensive, unreliable availability, drivers often decline

Winter: Take the shuttle. Seriously. Highway 1 is dangerous in winter.

⚠️

WINTER DRIVING ADVISORY

Highway 1 between Calgary and Banff is one of the most dangerous stretches of road in Canada during winter. Black ice, sudden snowstorms, and whiteout conditions cause numerous accidents every year.

  • Winter tires are legally required October 1 - April 30
  • Roads can close without warning during storms
  • Rental car insurance often doesn't cover winter accidents
  • Even experienced drivers get caught out

Our recommendation: Take the shuttle November through March. It's safer, cheaper when you factor in parking, and you can enjoy the scenery instead of white-knuckling the steering wheel.

📱 UBER / TAXI

NOT RECOMMENDED

Yes, you can technically Uber from Calgary to Banff. But should you? Probably not.

✓ When It Works

  • Door-to-door convenience
  • No schedule to follow
  • Can split with others

✗ The Problems

  • $150-250+ one way
  • Drivers often decline the trip
  • Long wait times at airport
  • Surge pricing common
  • No Uber availability IN Banff for return
  • Winter? Good luck finding a driver
💡 Reality Check: We've heard countless stories of people waiting 45+ minutes at YYC for an Uber driver willing to go to Banff, only to pay $200+ for the privilege. The shuttle is $75 and leaves on schedule.

COMMON QUESTIONS

What everyone asks

How long does it take to get from Calgary to Banff?

About 1.5 hours by car in good conditions, 2 hours by shuttle (includes stops). In winter storms, it can take much longer or roads may close entirely.

Is there Uber in Banff?

Uber operates in Calgary but service to/in Banff is very limited. Don't count on it for your return trip. Book a shuttle or arrange a taxi.

Do I need a car in Banff?

Not necessarily. Banff town is walkable, Roam Transit connects major areas, and Parks Canada runs shuttles to Lake Louise/Moraine Lake. A car adds flexibility but isn't essential.

What if my flight is delayed?

Shuttle companies usually accommodate delays if you contact them. Book with a company that has multiple daily departures so you can catch a later one if needed.

Can I rent a car just for a day trip?

Yes! Some visitors take the shuttle to Banff, then rent a car for a day to visit Moraine Lake or drive the Icefields Parkway. Best of both worlds.
